What it trains
Association. Paired-associate learning is the lab version of the hardest everyday memory job: names to faces, words to meanings. Arbitrary pairs are brutal precisely because nothing connects them, and every classic mnemonic system attacks that gap the same way, by inventing a connection. The link you make is doing the remembering.
