How to improve your memory
Six levers with real evidence behind them. None of them are exotic; all of them beat any app, including this one.
1. Space it out
Ten minutes today, ten tomorrow, ten on Friday beats thirty minutes once. The spacing effect has been replicated for over a century, since Ebbinghaus mapped forgetting curves in 1885. A 2006 meta-analysis by Cepeda and colleagues covering 254 studies found spaced practice reliably beats massed practice, often by 10 to 30 percent retention.

2. Test yourself instead of rereading
Retrieval practice is the most underrated study tool in existence. Roediger and Karpicke's 2006 experiments showed students who tested themselves remembered about 50 percent more a week later than students who reread the same material. Struggling to recall is not a sign it is failing; the struggle is the mechanism.

3. Build images and places
The method of loci, placing items along an imagined route, is the technique behind nearly every memory championship. When Maguire's team scanned the top performers of the World Memory Championships in 2003, they found no structural brain differences from controls; the champions were using spatial strategy, not spare hardware. That is good news: the technique is learnable.

4. Sleep on it, literally
Memories consolidate during sleep, especially deep slow-wave phases. Cutting sleep after learning measurably cuts what survives to the next day; naps as short as 60 to 90 minutes show consolidation effects in lab studies. The cheapest memory upgrade available is a consistent bedtime.

5. Move
Aerobic exercise is one of the few interventions with evidence for structural brain change. Erickson's 2011 trial found a year of regular walking increased hippocampal volume in older adults by about 2 percent, roughly reversing 1 to 2 years of age-related shrinkage, with matching memory gains.

6. Pay attention on purpose
Most everyday memory failures are encoding failures: the name was never stored, so there is nothing to retrieve. One deliberate second of attention, repeating a name, noticing where you put the keys, outperforms any recall trick applied later. Attention is trainable; our Stroop and tracking games press exactly that muscle.
Where the games fit
Games measure and sharpen the faculties these levers rely on. Use the daily test as your consistent measurement, apply the levers above in real life, and watch both move together. That is the honest loop.
