What it trains
Spatial. This is a direct workout for the visuospatial sketchpad, the part of working memory that holds what-was-where. In Baddeley and Hitch's 1974 model it is a separate store from verbal memory, which is why you can hold a phone number and a grid pattern at the same time without them colliding.

One honest tip
Do not memorize dots. Memorize the shape they make: an L, a diagonal, a kite.
