Flash Count
Dots flash and vanish. Type how many there were. Up to about four you just know; past that, it gets interesting.
How to play
- Watch the dot field flash
- Type the count on the keypad
- Exact answers level you up
- 3 lives; more dots, shorter flashes
What it trains
Attention. Up to about 4 items, humans do not count; they subitize, an instant and nearly error-free read of quantity. The word was coined in 1949 by Kaufman and colleagues. Beyond that boundary you either group dots into clusters or estimate. This game lives right on that line, which is why level 3 feels free and level 8 does not.
Kaufman et al., 1949, American Journal of Psychology.
One honest tip
Chunk the field into 3s and 4s and add, instead of scanning dot by dot.
