Digit Span

A number appears, then vanishes. Type it back. It grows by one digit every round you survive.

How to play

  1. Press Show me and memorize the number
  2. Type it back on the keypad, or your keyboard
  3. Each correct answer adds a digit
  4. You have 2 lives

What it trains

Working memory. Digit span is one of the oldest tools in psychology and still part of modern IQ batteries like the WAIS. Most adults land between 6 and 7 digits forward. Later work argued the true capacity is closer to 4 chunks once rehearsal and grouping are stripped away, which is why phone numbers are written in blocks.

Miller, 1956; Cowan, 2001, Behavioral and Brain Sciences.

One honest tip

Group digits into pairs or triples as they appear. 8-1-4-9-2-6 is six things; 814-926 is two.
